Monsoon rains: Mumbai witness traffic snarls delays in local trains operations; Check all latest updates here | Mint - Mint

Mumbai continues to witness moderate to heavy rainfalls on Friday affecting the traffic movement in the city. The incidents of waterlogging were reported from several areas with the administration deciding to shut the subway between Andheri and Jogeshwari railway stations twice during the day due to the accumulation of water around it. One positive aspect for Mumbaikar in the heavy rains is the increase in water levels of the lakes. The commuters claimed delays on several routers of local trains due to heavy rains in Mumbai.

The commercial capital of India is receiving heavy rainfall since the onset of the monsoon on 25 June. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that Mumbai has received 95% of the June rainfall in just six days - between June 24 and 29.

The continuous and relentless rainfall caused a rise in the water levels of seven lakes responsible for supplying water to the city. Initially, the combined water reserves of these reservoirs amounted to 7.26% on 28 June, but it has now increased to 10.88%, as reported. In response to the depleting water reserves, the city's civic authorities previously declared their intention to implement a 10% reduction in water supply starting from Saturday.

Andheri subway closed twice for traffic

The Andheri subway experienced significant waterlogging issues, leading to the closure of traffic twice during the day. Initially, at approximately 10:45 am, the police took the decision to close the subway, redirecting traffic to alternative routes. Once the water levels subsided, vehicular movement was allowed to resume at around 11:45 am. However, later in the day, at approximately 3:40 pm, officials reported the need to close the subway for traffic once again.

"Due to waterlogging, Andheri Subway is closed, while traffic is diverted to Vile Parle bridge and Captain Gore Marg, SV road," Mumbai traffic police tweeted.

The operations of railways due to heavy rains largely remained unaffected but commuters claimed that some trains were delayed in the morning. Among the affected train routes include the Central Railways' Harbour line that operates services between Panvel and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

“For maintenance work of tracks, signalling & overhead equipment, a Jumbo block of five hours will be taken on UP & DOWN Slow lines between Churchgate and Mumbai Central (local) stations from 1035 hrs to 1535 hrs on Sunday, 2nd July," Western railway said in a statement.

Mumbai rains didn't have any major impact on bus operations with Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) spokesperson claiming that none of their bus services was canceled or diverted to the alternative route.

40 incidents of tree fall

Mumbai's civic body the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) informed that the city saw 40 incidents of tree fall and 13 incidents of short circuits in the last 24 hours. BMC added that 7 incidents of the collapse of parts of residential properties were also reported during this period.
