Bart Preneel, a cryptography professor and privacy stalwart at KU Leuven University near Brussels, says Europeans have been fighting for hundreds of years to get the right power balance between governments, corporations and individuals. That has been destroyed by governments’ increasing powers of surveillance and the growth of U.S. tech giants whose business model is based on hovering up masses of personal data.
